Description
Nature doesn't move in a straight line, and as a part of nature, neither do we.
~ Gloria Steinem [fr. Revolution From Within]

Since I use this expression every now and again .. :) .. I was prompted to look up the derivation of this slang term.
Of naval origin from the 19th century, the phrase came into use after journeys were made to Telegraph Island, which is reached by a looping, bending route and which, apparently, those posted for duty on the island were said to lose their sanity from the monotony of leaving on the small island. (Apparently, too, in days past psychiatric institutions were often reached by traveling a looping, bending road, which was the first impression a patient would have of the facility).
While you can run, cycle, rollerskate, rollerblade, walk or stroll the 14 mile seawall perimeter of Stanley Park, in Vancouver, Canada (one of the largest urban parks in the world), you will not go arond the bend from monotony. You will, however, experience a series of winding loops and bends as you traverse the wonderful park which offers acres of forest, gardens, forest, lakes, wildlife, beaches, a water park, a miniature train, Canada's largest aquarium, horse drawn carriage rides, a petting zoo, restaurants, and a variety of physical activities (tennis, golf, swimming .. more). And perhaps more I have forgotten to mention here.
This image was taken going around the bend of the Stanley Park seawall on a walk towards the Vancouver Rowing Club in the autumn ... an image of which has also been posted here.
