Dahlia
Family : Compositae (Asteraceae)
Cultivated species are named variabilis, distinguishing it from the wild forms of Mexico and Guatemala.
From midsummer through to the first frost, the dahlia blooms, from size small to dinner plate size, in every colour but blue. Its history is a proud one: Napoleon's Josephine planted the dahlia in her garden in France. After the Napoleonic Wars, it became the most popular plant in England and throughout the early 1800's, was the most popular plant across Europe.
There are 27 species of dahlia, which belong to the largest family of flowering plants (14,000 species). From these 27 species, over 57,000 forms have been cultivated.
The flower types of the dahlia are several: the chrysanthemum, the peony, the star, the pompon, the single flower, the anemone, the collerete, the waterlily, the Fimbriated, the double orchid, the formal decorative, the ball, the cactus, and the semi-cactus.
The dahlia is the national flower of Mexico. The early Aztecs used to eat the tubers for food.

The calyx of a flower is its group of sepals, the outermost portion of the bloom from which the flower originates. The word is derived from the Latin calyx, and from the Greek kalyx meaning: seed pod, husk or outer covering (the root kalyptein means to cover or conceal).
Calyx is also the variant form of the old Greek name, Calix, which means Handsome Man.
Here, the calyx is chaperon to a lovely dahlia in a garden near by. Its gentle, protective profile caught my eye in the late summer's evening light.
