Description
Bougainvillea (paper flower)
Family : Nyctaginaceae
It was the radiance of an opium-dream - an airy and spirit-lifting vision more wildly divine than the fantasies which hovered about the slumbering souls of the daughters of Delos.
~ Edgar Allen Poe
While this colourful vine is found in hot climates all over the world, it is originally from South America. Thin, papery bracts which grow down the stem surrounding the small, white flowers contribute to the marvelous hues we see on this plant.
In Malaysia, the flower and stem are infused in water, and used as a revitalizing tonic. Studies have been done which have found it has potential for treatment in diabetes. Extracts are prepared commercially in Mexico and used in syrups and candies for coughs and respiratory infections.
Chiffon comes from the French, meaning rag or small piece of cloth, but over time it came to mean a light, airy fabric, and marketers began using the word for any products especially light in texture.
