Description
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
~ Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Brighton is in the South Downs of England, a chalk range that runs along the south of England, down to the coast culminating at the grand cliffs of Beachy Head , some 530 ft ( 160 m) above the water.
A feature attraction of Brighton is the Royal Pavilion, an iconic landmark inspired by the architecture of Mughal India, built by the Prince of Wales (who later became King George IV in 1820). Sea bathing had become popular then, and he helped turn the fishing village into the first fashionable English resort (which also developed a reputation for being a health resort). He wanted an elaborate setting for his lavish parties, and transformed his farmhouse into a lavish, somewhat eccentric, Oriental palace with distinctive Indian turrets.
Queen Victoria sold the Pavilion to the town of Brighton in 1850. It has been perfectly preserved, managed today by its custodians, the Brighton and Hove city councils. It is the only royal palace to be owned by a city
