Masonry detail of a pillar, Westminster Abbey, London, England
There is a great deal of history involving the development and building of this famous cathedral, spanning several centuries and church orders, part of which involved the evolution of Gothic art originating from the barbarian Gothic tribes.
At one point during the Gothic period, it became customary to decorate masonry. This was usually with 'natural' foliage, amongst which could be seen animals, birds, and people often morphing into something else.
Westminster Abbey has been used for every Coronation - amongst other special occasions - since 1066.
