Energy is Eternal Delight.

Colours in the Autumn season are ... Exuberant. Colourful, vibrant, looking to be full of energy, vigor and life when in fact they are slowing down for hibernation.
We are familiar with chlorophyll, the pigment that gives leaves their green colour. Chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis - the chemical reaction where sunlight manufactures sugar for the plant to feed on. The leaf is the plant's food factory.
As long as the chlorophyll is being produced and broken down, the leaves appear green. But when the light slows due to seasonal change - Autumn - chlorophyll production slows down. The veins that carry fluids into and out of the leaf gradually close off as a layer of cells forms at the base of each leaf. These clogged veins trap sugars in the leaf and promote production of anthocyanins: other pigments that are exposed and show their colours.
It is the particular species that will determine the colours. Most autumn leaves (70%) contain anthocyanins which produce leaves of brown to red. Yellow, orange, and brown leaves result from degrading chloroplasts which expose carotenoid pigments.
