Japanese Anemone (Chinese Anemone, Thimbleweed, Windflower)
Anemone hupehensis japonica
Family : Ranunculacea
There are several species of anemones, over 250 of them. They are one of the first flowers to bloom in the springtime, through to the autumn.
The Japanese anemone begins its bloom in the late summertime. It is native to China, and was discovered there in 1844. It was taken to England when Japanese gardens came into vogue. They have since naturalized there, and it is from which most garden hybrids are bred. It has been naturalized in Japan for hundreds of years, and it can found on cool, open slopes in North America and Europe.
Anemos, in Greek, means wind. The anemone was known as the Daughter Of The Wind because it was believed the wind was responsible for the flowers opening. Ironically, it prefers a protected area away from the wind, the gusts of which can snap its fragile stems.

This fragile bloom on its long stem bent itself low to the ground in the breeze, swaying and bobbing gracefully, this way & that, with the light shining upon its crown.
