Snowdrop (Milkflower; Candlemas bells)
Galanthus nivalis
Family : Amaryllis
Galanthus , fr Greek gala = milk ; and anthos = flower
One of the first signs of springtime, this flower has only been recorded from the wild since the 18th century. It is believed that monks brought it to our attention, and it is often found on sites of ancient monasteries. Folklore has it that, when worn outside, the snowdrops would keep one having pure thoughts .... apparently, however, they were bad luck to bring indoors, so take note! :)
Bad luck aside, Queen Victoria carried snowdrops as her wedding bouquet , and its healing properties are known as far back as 1465. Galantamine is an alkaloid found in the bulbs and flowers of some snowdrops [Galanthus caucasicus] and is used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. This plant is also being investigated into treatment of HIV.
Snowdrop gardens are popular in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, and Britain celebrates this springtime bulb with festivals in February. At the top of the stem is a protective leaf that helps the snowdrop push through snow. A snowdrop has no petals; rather, it has tepals .
While the Galanthus was originally native to Spain, France, and Germany, through to the Middle East, it has since become naturalized in many other countries of the world (eg Norway, Sweden, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United States, eastern Canada, and more). It is illegal now in most countries to collect these bulbs from the wild.
