Description
Mystery is that which shows itself and at the same time withdraws.
~ Martin Heidegger
A drive around the shoreline of Lake Tahoe presents an ever-changing scenic experience. The lake has a mystical, magical flavour to it; I was ever-cognizant of a sense of mystery permeating its awesome, natural beauty.
Situated directly on the border between Carifornia and Nevada -- 2/3 is in California and 1/3 in Nevada -- this large freshwater lake is a popular destination resort in the Sierra Nevada (Spanish for snowy mountain range), USA. The name Tahoe originated from the indigenous Washoe who called this place the da ow a ga (edge of lake); da ow eventually became Tahoe. The Washoe believed this lake to be a spiritual place.
There are 63 streams and two hot springs that feed in to this lake. It is the second deepest lake in the United States: 1,645 ft (501 m). Scientists have said if this lake was ever drained it would take about 700 years for the snowmelt, hot springs and precipitation to refill it again, and if you were to pour Lake Tahoe out onto an area the size of California, the water would still be 14 inches (36 cm) deep!
More: with 39 trillion gallons of water in it, there is enough to apparently supply each person in the United States with 50 gallons of water every day for five years (the evaporation alone from that same amount of water would supply a city the size of Los Angeles for that same length of time).
The lake is 22 miles (35 km) long and 12 miles (19km) wide. The shoreline circumference is 72 miles (116km) and the drive drive around the lake is a very pleasant one. There are many places to stop and explore along the way: parks, museums, food places, and more.
It is sunny here: The sun shines for 75% of the year (274 days).
During the California Gold Rush, the area around the lake was popular for gold mining, it has become in its modern day very environmentally conscious and government regulated to impose environmental regulations.
