The rose originated in Persia, and comes from one of the oldest known perennial shrubs. There are 10,000+ worldwide.
Roses are equated with romance, peace, and fulfillment; wearing one is believed to bring love. They bring good luck, too, and if planted in a garden, will bring abundance --- as well as bloom from May through to September.
The ancients wore strings of rose petals for a fragrance. To make your own rosebeads:
3 c. dried dark red rose petals
2 tsp. rose absolute or rose geranium essential oil
1 T. ground orris root
1 T. gum tragacanth
1/2 c. rosewater
Grind the dry ingredients in a mortar and pestle. Gradually add the rosewater, drip by drip, to get a workable pulp; then make little round balls. Pierce holes with a darning needle. Dry on a tray in a dark cupboard for a week. String the beads.
For potpourris, if picked in the morning as soon as the dew is dry, the dried roses will hold the scent longer.

Captured in warm sunlight late on a morning, enjoying a bloom that eventually will disappear for another season .... which, thankfully for me, still lingered on a little bit longer .... an uncropped splendour, taken in natural light:)
