Peony
Botanical Name : Paeonia
Family : Paeoniaceae [ prev. Ranunculaceae (buttercup) ]
Greek, fr. Paeon, physician of the gods (Paeos, a physician during the Trojan Wars)
Originally from China, where it was used medicinally, the peony has traversed the world. Paeony officianalis .. the 'medicinal peony' with the feathery leaves... grew in English monastery gardens, and was used for female ailments. (The Paeony mascula was used for male illnesses). By the the time it reached the Americas, the peony was grown primarily for ornamental purposes.
It has been used in the past to treat nervous conditions and epilepsy. The root is still used in traditional Chinese medicine. The red peony root cleans the blood and improves circulation, and treats eczema; the white peony root improves liver function and is used as a woman's tonic. The tree peony bark is used for the blood, eczema, boils and abscesses.
Please do not disturb your peony!: it can live for hundreds of years if you leave it be.
