Description
Ladybug! Ladybug!
Fly away home.
Your house is on fire.
And your children all gone.
All except one,
And that's little Ann,
For she crept under
The frying pan.
~ Children's Nursery Rhyme
* ---------------------- *
If you are in Europe, this would be called the Ladybird; in other areas, particularly the United States, it is called a Ladybug.
This unfortunate sounding children's rhyme has several derivations. One is that it came about from a superstition that it was unlucky to kill a ladybird, and saying this chant would make them fly off. There was another superstition for making a wish come true: if this verse was chanted, and the ladybug flew off, the wish would come true.
Another suggests that, prior to Christianity, the ladybird was a symbol of goddess worship, and the reference for the ladybug to fly away home meant the pagans should go underground; the house being on fire and the children gone refers to the destruction of the pagan temples.
Our cute ladybug friend here is one of 5,000 of its species on our planet. We usually see them with spots : ladybugs can wear up to 24 spots on their coat .... or none at all, like this one: The Rebel :)
