Allium Moly (Golden Garlic; Lily Leek)

This pretty, small, perennial spring bulb blooms in May and June with a vivid brilliance amongst its slim, green sheath of leaves. It is a flowering onion that grows easily in the sun, and attracts butterflies to it.

In Homer's Odyssey, moly was a magical herb resistant to magic. Linnaeus first classified this plant as the Allium magicum, the magic onion.

While it has been assumed that a shaman is North American, the term comes from a region of Siberia where the indigenous acted as an intermediary between the natural and spiritual worlds - the dreamtime - diagnosing and curing through their traditional healing.

Through misunderstanding of what they did, the shamans were persecuted during the Inquisition and elsewhere. Today, they are better understood, and anthropologists around the world study what they do to to preserve their teachings.

These flowers are really very small .. about the size of my small fingernail (or just a little bit over). And they really are very brilliant yellow. As it was pretty much high noon when my lens and I befriended these blooms, I shaded the plant with my body as I took the photo to shield the glare from the sunlight, and soften the image. Taken in natural light ..... uncropped; unedited ..... nature in all its splendour :)
