Description
Two souls, alas, are housed within my breast.
~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe [fr. Faust]

Calla Lily
Zantedeschia aethiopica (white); Z. elliottiana (golden)
(Araceae)
There are but a few species of this wildflower indigenous to tropical Africa. Their ethereal beauty so loved here is often regarded as an unwanted weed in its native country.
The Calla Lily is not really a lily at all: it actually belongs the same family as the caladium and philodendron. They are commonly white but also grow in a variety of colours.
It is used at weddings, a new beginning - as a symbol of marital bliss and devotion; it is used at funerals, a life ending - as a symbol of sympathy and purification of the departing soul.
While parts of this plant are toxic, so that young children and pets should be kept away from it, the edible rhizome was used by physicians of old to treat burns and scalds.
While it was a symbol of lust and sensuality for the ancient Romans, for the early Christians, it represented chastity and purity.
Dual interpretations aside, its appearance has a singular meaning: it is stunning in its sleek beauty.

I enjoyed reading your interpretation and the meaning you found behind this image, Connie. Nature helps teach us so much about life, accepting the existence of dualities occurring in life as seen in nature. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful image. The composition is quite lovely. The flower really pops out at the viewer.
Connie Handscomb replied:
