Switzerland has many fairytale cities; Luzern (Lucerne in French) is one. And, as fairytales go, perhaps this is why there are so many frescos painted on their buildings -- such as this one, captured over a restaurant in one of Luzern's picturesque squares in Old Town.
During the annual pre-Lenten 6-day Luzern Carnival (Fasnacht) beginning the week before Ash Wednesday, masked bands and characters mingle about dressed in costume and making a great deal of noise. This traditional music festival, Guggemuusige, is an Alemannic folk custom that dates back to the 16th century. It involves not only loud, weird music but includes horns, pails, whistles, rattles and any other object that makes noise - all intended to chase away the 'spirits of winter'. Masks and costumes are all a part of this scare tactic.
