~ John Singer Sargent
* ------------------ *
As one of the founders of the New English Art Club, John Singer Sargent's paintings broke away from the common Impressionist style of the day. The famous American painter had a somewhat breezy way with watercolours. His brushwork was loose; his colours were layered with similar hues; he left areas of untouched white on the canvas. Many of his paintings are suffused with light, and were painted outside — even his evening paintings were painted in bursts, while the light lasted. His friend Monet helped him along with that — ie favouring the light [and he ‘helped’ Monet by painting Monet’s portrait].
While he loved the outdoors, Sargent actually had quite a cosmopolitan background: born in Florence [Italy , although his parents were American, descended from one of the oldest colonial families] ; studies in Rome and Paris; high society in Boston and London [he traveled extensively in the world, but made his home in London]. His fame escalated with his portraits of society during a luxurious Edwardian era, and when he tired of portraitures, he remained firmly established as a watercolourist.

Simply stunning, Connie! I love the play of sunlight and shadow you have created here in this beautiful piece. I also have a large backlog to post, but I certainly look forward to seeing more of yours. v/f
Connie Handscomb replied:
You made me smile, Douglas; I’m starting to realize the backlog[s] don’t really disintegrate very easily — nevertheless, its ok, worse things happen at sea — as it is, the backlogging is a result of doing something we enjoy. Thank you heaps for your kindness, & your support of what I do [my “experiments”] ; it really is a boost for me ;)🍃
