Rhododendron (Pacific Rhododendron ; California rhododendron)
R.macrophyllum
Family : Ericaceae (Heath)
There are over 1,000 species of this flowering shrub which can grow from 3-15 feet high. Originally found in India, China and other parts of Asia, it was introduced to Europe in the 1700's, and is now easily found in the mountains of North America: in British Columbia, down to Washington and Oregon, east to Montana in the United States. It is the state flower of Washington (the Pacific Rhodendron); the national flower of Nepal, and the state flower of Kashmir.
The blooms can be profuse, and large, and they add vibrant colour amidst the conifers in the forest.
The homeopathic remedy prepared from the freshly obtained leaves of the rhododendron plant is used to treat a number of medical conditions, including rheumatism, arthritis and gout. The rhododendrons in the Himalayas are an important part of Tibetan herbalism. The juice of some species can be narcotic; Greek soldiers in 401 BC eating honey from bees collecting rhodendron pollen and nectar reported it to be hallucinogenic.
In Nepal, it is used to make wine.
The dried leaves are used in incense.

An early morning walk, and this bloom beckoned to me ... uncropped; captured at an angle, in natural light .. the backlighting provided a soft, ethereal flow of colour .. nature in all its splendour.

Like the way you chose to capture this Connie. I find flowers structured like this to be a challenge - what to focus on, what perspective is most pleasing. You did a splendid job of both picking a focal point and choosing point of view. Aptly titled and beautiful.
Connie Handscomb replied:
Thankyou so much, Joni! You are absolutely right! I've scrapped several editions:))
