Tulip
Genus : Tulipa spp.
Family : Liliaceae
Tulips mean eternal life, and are floral heralds of springtime. A cultural symbol of the Ottoman Empire, it appeared on textiles, ceramics, woodcarvings and many other art forms. Painters loved to paint the tulip. The Golden Age of Dutch painting was abundant with still life compositions of the tulip. Special tulip books were published, as were catalogues for wealthy collectors, for it was only the wealthy that could afford this bulb.
In 1630, one single bulb was exchanged for:
2 wheat loads, 4 rye loads, 4 fat oxen, 8 fat pigs, 12 fat sheep, 2 bogsheads of wine, 4 barrels of beer, 2 barrels of butter, 1,000 lbs. of cheese, a bed, a suit of clothes, and a silver beaker.
The colour gold (or yellow) was associated with the suffragette movement (although it was used with other representative flowers as well). The gold colour is often equated with the color of success, or triumph.

We live in an area with an abundance of tulips in the springtime. Not only can they be found in private gardens, they are found on urban boulevards, in the parks, and anywhere else deemed appropriate for a bright splash of colour. And, particularly in the springtime, it is the habit of local vendors to keep an extra abundant supply on hand. The stands of local markets are alive with their spritely colours - such a joy to see! It is not a habit I would care to see broken.
