Description
All good things are wild and free.
~ Henry David Thoreau
* -------------- *
Pyracantha angustofolia (narrowleaf firethorn; slender firethorn; woolly firethorn)
Family : Rosaceae
It may not look anything like one, but this vibrantly coloured evergreen shrub is a member of the rose family (yes, I was surprised to learn about this, too).
Birds love feeding on these berries, which range in colour from bright orange to scarlet red. While the birds like these berries, it is not recommended that humans ingest them : a toxin, hydrogen cyanide, is in both the leaves and the berries . (Interestingly, it is this that gives almonds their flavour). Medicinally, it is of benefit and is used in cancer treatment . In excess, however, it could cause respiratory failure, or worse so ... please don't eat these pretty berries!
* -------------- *
We've had some torrents of rain fall upon us these last few days ... but for one. And on that day, we witnessed a flurry of activity from the birds, a frenzy really, as they feasted upon the berries of the season. They may have been waiting for the rains to let up a bit, in which case, I'm sure they were very hungry! I wasn't quick enough to capture the birds .. the stationary berries are more my speed :)

Connie, I grew up with these berries (or ones very closely related) growing in front of my parents front porch. I thought they had magical powers... though I never did figure out what that magic was! LOL! Very nice image :)) F/V
