Description
The aquamarine... has the glassy tint of the waves of the sea.
~Charles Blanc [fr. Art In Ornament And Dress, 1875]
* ------------------- *
Hydrangea arborescens
Genus: Hydrangeaceae
It has an unusual characteristic: its stem peels off in seven successive layers of thin, differently coloured bark. 'Seven Barks' is an old Cherokee diuretic and detoxifier, and used to ease muscle sprains and burns. It is also used as a tonic for bladder and kidney ailments.
It has history: fossils date back 65 million years! It likes shady places in the woods.
If you find it blooming Blue, it is in acidic soil; if it blooms Pink, it is in alkaline soil.

It was February, a few years back now. Getting impatient for the voluptuous springtime blooms still to arrive, I worked with what was available to me at the time, which were some hydrangea leaves that had become brittle with age.
When these colourful petals begin to disintegrate in the autumn, their framework becomes exposed. The patterns are delicate and beautiful, much like a fine, artistic metalwork -- a beautiful filigree.
Captured in natural light .... then provided a pretty aquamarine tone ... nature in all her jewel-like splendour :)
