Description
Allium
(Latin for garlic)
Family : Alliaceae
This family includes garlic, onions, chives, scallion, shallots and leeks.
There are approximately 690 species of this genus of perennial. Some can grow to 6 ft (1.m) tall, and are used ornamentally, such the Purple Sensation - commonly called the Flowering Onion or the Persian Onion - which will eventually burst open into a riot of colourful spokes and form a large ball.
The allium does have medicinal value; it helps the body fight against disease and infection, provides relief against skin conditions such as psoriasis.
Since the plant emerges from a single bulb, symbolically it is said to represent Unity, as well as Humility and Patience.
