Description
Eastbourne Bandstand
Sound and gesture are contemporary, identical and indistinguishable .... Linked to its own past, the gesture fills up with music and becomes rounded, like the universe... the beauty of gesture renders time visible.
~Catherine David [ fr. The Beauty Of Gesture]

Eastbourne is a British seaside resort town on the south coast of England. It brims with the nostalgia of its Victorian origins.
The Eastbourne Bandstand dates back to the mid-1930's. Bandstands were popular at all the seaside resorts in the days before recorded music, and even since, as this bandstand is still operational (it still offers 150 concerts of musical entertainment per year).
Some 1,200 bandstands had been built between the 1860's through to the Second World War. For those who have watched the series Foyle's War: this bandstand was featured in its programme.
This image captures some detail from the Art Deco period. It is found on the top portion of the pillars to the entrance of the main building of the bandstand. The hint of Orientalism was a distinctive feature of seaside architecture of that time.
