Hibiscus
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (Chinese hibiscus; China rose; Hawaiian hibiscus; Shoe Flower)
Family : Malvaceae
This elegant, tropical bloom is a striking member of the mallow family. While it grabs attention here and is treated with exotic reverence, in India it is used to polish shoes! - when squeezed, the petals release a viscous gum which apparently makes a good shoe polish; keep this in mind when you're stuck for alternatives :)
In Malaysia, it is the national flower: its five petals symbolize the country's five principles.
In China, one variety is used to make tea from the leaves, and the flowers are eaten.
In Hawaii, ladies wear it behind their ears as hair ornaments, as well as sending a message: the red behind a right ear means you have a lover already; worn behind the left ear means you are available; worn above both ears: you already have a lover .... but are looking for another. (Combustion requires a chemical reaction between two elements in order to flame, or burn. Hopefully you will not get these messages mixed up!)
Originating from Asia, it distributed itself throughout the Pacific. It was introduced to Europe in the 1700's, where it has been widely cultivated. It can bloom all year round.
