Freesia
Freesia refracta
Family : Iridaceae
Although native to South Africa, this flower was named after a German
physician, Dr.Friedrich Freese, who first recorded it in Europe in 1786.
Prized for their heady scent - the white blooms have the strongest scent - there are only six species of this plant (but over 300 cultivars!).
Popular in wedding bouquets, this floral symbol means Innocence.

Kahlil Gibran's poetic passages and insights have been lifelong favourites of mine, and looking past the petal edges within, down into the sweet scentred core of this bloom, brought his sage wisdom to mind. [It seems to happen with the freesia, since as I'm uploading this I've just realized I've used this quotation for another freesia image as well].
This flower speaks of romance and love, bonds of shared connections which ebb and flow, ripples of passion in the shadows, and satisfaction in the joyous light of fulfillment. Love does not always reveal itself completely, and its clarity is sometimes dimmed with emotion. Yet when it is there, its illuminating essence glows.
Sharing an intimacy within the deepest folds of the freesia .... a grainy effect applied to an uncropped image .... nature, softly mysterious in its elegant splendour :)
