Calla Lily
Zantedeschia aethiopica (white); Z. elliottiana (golden)
(Araceae)
The Calla Lily is not really a lily at all: it actually belongs the same family as the caladium and philodendron. They are commonly white but also grow in a variety of colours.
It is used at weddings, a new beginning - as a symbol of marital bliss and devotion; it is used at funerals, a life ending - as a symbol of sympathy and purification of the departing soul.
In times past, the edible rhizome was used by physicians to treat burns and scalds.
Parts of this plant are toxic, so young children and pets should be kept away from it.
Symbolically, for the ancient Romans, it represented lust and sensuality; for the early Christians, it represented chastity and purity.
There are but a few species of this wildflower indigenous to tropical Africa. Their ethereal beauty so loved here is often regarded as an unwanted weed in its native country.

My original image of a cluster of burgundy callas was recoloured and lightly textured.
The colour copper signifies wealth, and it is tripled here with this triad of callas; with this, I wish you much prosperity :)
