Calla Lily
Zantedeschia aethiopica (white); Z. elliottiana (golden)
(Araceae)
There are but a few species of this wildflower indigenous to tropical Africa. Their ethereal beauty so loved here is often regarded as an unwanted weed in its native country.
The Calla Lily is not really a lily at all: it actually belongs the same family as the caladium and philodendron. They are commonly white but also grow in a variety of colours.
It is used at weddings, a new beginning - as a symbol of marital bliss and devotion; it is used at funerals, a life ending - as a symbol of sympathy and purification of the departing soul.
While parts of this plant are toxic, so that young children and pets should be kept away from it, the edible rhizome was used by physicians of old to treat burns and scalds.
While it was a symbol of lust and sensuality for the ancient Romans, for the early Christians, it represented chastity and purity.
Dual interpretations aside, its appearance has a singular meaning: it is stunning in its sleek beauty.

A curve: so simple to create. It has been used decoratively since prehistoric times - a stick in the sand would suffice.
In nature, this sinuous, serpentine shape has a natural fluidity that draws attention at the same time that it relaxes. Curves in nature are all around us, so much so that we likely don't pay much attention to them; as a shape, they are much taken for granted :)
Here, the dramatic light falling upon this calla lily really did catch my attention: the implied curve drawing the eye to its pleasing, sensuous shape.
