UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ref. 267.
The capital city of Switzerland is the beautiful cobbled city of historic Bern. It is a university city, the seat of the Federal Assembly and headquarters for several international organizations.
For all this, it is still relatively small for an urban city (population about 130,000 in the city proper) and still retains a unique medieval charm, and the six kilometres of Old City in the heart of Bern, with its ancient red-roofed structures, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ref. 267.
The city was founded in 1191, with its coat of arms being a bear. It was named after the first animal that was killed by the duke at this new settlement: Bär is German for bear; hence, the name city name Bärn .... now Bern.
Many famous people have lived in Bern, one of them being Albert Einstein who came up with is theory of relativity here in 1905. His apartment was at 49 Kramgasse , and The Einstein Museum celebrates his work.
Many of Bern's streets are restricted to pedestrians and public transport, and there are several bridges over the river which winds its way through the city.
These tiled rooftops completed enthralled me; they represent the quaint, medieval charm of this European city so well.

Congrats, Connie! This photo has been featured on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites group on FAA/Pixels. I like the abstract art feel that the layers of rooftops convey. I also love the details...you can see every tile.
