Aster (Michaelmas Daisy; New England Aster)
Callistephus chinesis
Aster is Latin, Greek and English for 'star', so named with reference to the floral shape of the flower heads.
While we find asters blooming freely here on the Pacific Coast from late summer through autumn in meadows and along riverbanks, in wet forests and clearings, they actually originate from China, Siberia and Japan.
The ancient Greeks considered the aster to be sacred, and magical, and modern folklore portends that hanging boughs of dried asters in the home protects it.
In Chinese medicine, the aster is used to treat hemorrhages, malaria, and pulmonary ailments.
Asters range in colour: pink, lilac to deep purple. They will attract bees and butterflies to your garden.
The aster is the the birth flower for September. For marriage anniversaries, it marks twenty years.
The English called them 'michaelmas daisies ' because their blooms come during the feast of Saint Michael (Sept 29th), and can bloom right through to Christmas.

The phrase Give It A Whirl has been used in expressions since the late 1800s to mean someone is willing to try out something new for the first time.
Etymology is mixed on its origins; one is that it came into use with the invention of the American whirligig toy (a stick with a small propeller attached to it). The derivation of the single word Whirl is attributed to the Old Norse (c. 1300) hirvla , meaning to spin.

The warm summer season may have been coming to a close, but this happy aster was not troubled with the prospect of the upcoming seasonal rains at all.
Nature in all her splendour, captured in the sunshine .... when All was well :)
