Description
This we know.
The earth does not belong to us;
we belong to the earth.
This we know.
All things are connected
like the blood which unites one family.
All things are connected.
Whatever befalls the earth
befalls the children of the earth,
We did not weave the web of life,
we are merely a strand in it.
Whatever we do the web,
we do to ourselves.
~ Chief Seattle

Mosses are vascular plants, which means they are excellent at moving water (and food) through its system. Moss is permeated, like a sponge, with capillary tubes that absorb and retain water from both the soil and the air. They are usually only one cell thick.
The Chinese traditionally used sphagnum moss on wounds, and it was used during the World Wars in Britain for the same purpose; in fact, a munitions factory in Scotland that make sphagnum moss cakes for field hospital compresses. It was used as a surgical dressing in Germany for 30 years. So, if you ever are in the woods in need of an antiseptic, keep in mind this moss does have proven antiseptic and germicidal properties.
Indigenous North Americans used moss for wound dressings as well; also, for diapers for their babies.
There are 8,000-9,000 species worldwide.

This ridge is on a log near the ocean's shore ..... or it was, before it had the misfortune to be rudely stripped of its greenery by persons unknown. Eventually I expect this colony in Moss World will restore itself to its former glory; meantime I have very fond memories of it here, with this image .... captured in the sunshine... ; unaltered, uncropped: nature in all its natural splendour.

What an incredible photograph, the very slight focus area makes the entire piece very fairylike and at any moment, I expect a tiny sprite to pop up her head from her mossy cushioned bed. Very pretty, Connie!
