Make the most of yourself....for that is all there is of you.

And as plants go, these certainly do make the most of themselves! Mosses are vascular plants, which means they are excellent at moving water (and food) through its system. Moss is permeated, like a sponge, with capillary tubes that absorb and retain water from both the soil and the air. They are usually only one cell thick.
The Chinese traditionally used sphagnum moss on wounds, and it was used during the World Wars in Britain for the same purpose; in fact, a munitions factory in Scotland that make sphagnum moss cakes for field hospital compresses. It was used as a surgical dressing in Germany for 30 years. So, if you ever are in the woods in need of an antiseptic, keep in mind this moss does have proven antiseptic and germicidal properties.
Indigenous North Americans used moss for wound dressings as well; also, for diapers for their babies.
There are 8,000-9,000 species worldwide.

We are having springtime now, and the rains some days are quite heavy. When they stop, I am eager to walk about and enjoy the blooms starting to show themselves. I love green moss, and was held captive in Moss World when the glint from the water there caught my eye. How clever these plants are at collecting water!
