Description
The gondola originated in Venice at least 1,000 years ago. Its unique, design allows a single oarsman to maneuver it through the narrow waterways. While it may not look it, it is composed of 280 separate interlocking pieces, as well as 8 types of wood (solid oak for the sides, lightweight fir for the bottom, malleable cherry for the thwarts, larch for water resistance, bendable walnut for the frame, linden for reinforcement, mahogany for trim, and elm to bend alongside the walnut) with the oar being of beech . It is 11 metres in length (36 ft.); 600 kilos (1377 pounds) in weight. One side is longer than the other, to allow it to turn easily. It can safely seat up to six people.
A gondolier is considered a noble profession, passed down through a family's generations, transporting the Venetian elite. Licenses are obtained from the gondola guild. This is a diehard male occupation; there has never been a female gondolier.
The gondolas are empty here; they are moored next to a building that I believe translates to be a place of refreshment.
