Description
The place is pre-eminently the region of dream and mystery...
~ Thomas Hardy [1870]
* ---------------------- *
Boscastle is on the Cornish coast about five miles north of Tintagel (the home of King Arthur). A very tidy village built within a narrow ravine, built up the valley of two rivers, it is a tiny port of old thatched and lime-washed cottages. In the summer of 2004, it was hit with a huge storm that wreaked massive destruction in the village as a powerful torrent of water surged through the valley. Over 1,000 people lost everything they had, and the economy of the area suffered dramatically. Still, the industrious people of Boscastle meticulously repaired and rebuilt their harbour and village after this hardship, restoring its picturesque beauty.
* ---------------------- *
As a special note of interest: in 1870 the great Victorian novelist and poet Thomas Hardy left his work in London as an architect to help restore the church of St. Juliot , where he met his future wife (the sister-in-law of the rector). His novel A Pair Of Blue Eyes describes this, as well as the countryside surrounding Boscastle. He also describes the cliffs in this area, which are the highest in Cornwall. After his wife's death, he returned to Boscastle, and wrote bittersweet love poems of the times with her in Poems 1912-1913.
The climate in this beautiful area is quite mild and warm, and Cornwall is home to many rare flower species. The green vegetation is lush; the craggy coastline rolls up and down, an invigorating walk amidst a wide array of varying emerald and lime hues.
The red crocosmia blooms are profuse on the Cornish coast; while native to South Africa, it has naturalized itself here. Another common sight is the red cardinal and red poppy.
* ---------------------- *
The first day visiting Boscastle, a stroll along the coast in the early evening before the sun was beginning to settle down brought us to this waterway entrance, the harbour at low tide. The greens of the hillside are breathtakingly vivid, and are reflected in the ocean alongside the thick algae and seaweed.
