Description
The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well.
~ Hippocrates

Yarrow (milfoil; thousand leaf; bloodwort; old man's pepper; fern weed;herbe aux charpentiers; nosebleed)
Achillea millefolium L.
Family: Asteraceae ;Compositae (aster; daisy)
This wildflower is found worldwide. It is native to North America, commonly found in meadow grasses.
It has been used since ancient times as a medicine plant, and has been called a Herbal Band-Aid. The plant was named in honour of Achilles, who used yarrow for his soldiers' wounds in the Trojan war. Used as a first aid treatment for wounds and nosebleeds: it stops bleeding, moves stagnant blood, prevents and clears blood clots while it tones blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. It is the chemicals Achilletin and achilleine that heal wounds and increase blood coagulation.
In France, it was called herbe aux charpentiers for its ability to heal wounds caused by carpenters' tools.
The Native Americans would mash it to a pulp in cold water and use the liquid on insect bites; the leaves were used as a poultice for spider bites and chewing on them apparently alleviates toothache.
Infusions from the whole plant are used to treat fevers, colds, nosebleeds, cramps, and urinary tract infections. It is applied to boils, open sores and cuts, swellings, burns, cuts and sprains. It also aids digestion, cleansing skin, is an anti-inflammatory, and anti-spasmodic.
Yarrow comes in shades of pink, yellow and lavender. The plants with yellow flowers are used to dye wool, while the leaves and flowers together produce an olive shade of dye.

Petit point is a fine embroidery, which is what comes to my mind when I look at this bloom sprinkling itself daintily throughout its natural habitat.
