Artist's Description

Cosmos (Mexican Aster)
Cosmos sulphureus ; Cosmos bipinnatus

Family : Asteraceae ; Compositae (aster; daisy; sunflower)

The most precious things of life are near at hand, without money and without price. Each of you has the whole wealth of the universe at your very door. All that I ever had, and still have, may be yours by stretching forth your hand and taking it.
~ John Burroughs

* ---------------------------------- *

This flower doesn't look at all like the tall yellow blooms of the sunflower, but it is actually indigenous to Mexico and a member of the sunflower family.

This wildflower is one of the easiest to grow. Perhaps that is the reason it is now naturalized through much of the United States and Canada, as well as South America and through to South Africa.

Medicinally, in Brazil and South America it has long been used for treatment of malaria.

In the kitchen, the leaves can be prepared to be eaten...
