When fabrics came into being, ribbons appeared ,too, As an adornment, they are one of the oldest, with England being the first country to use it to a great extent. Merchants who traveled the Silk Road to and from Asia brought the raw silk back with them, which weavers processed, and peddlers then sold them throughout Europe. They were used extensively throughout the Medieval and Renaissance periods (Geoffrey Chaucer called them Ribbands).

Initially, they were considered to be a luxury and were used only by the nobility; in fact, in the 16th century, the English Parliament tried to insist only the elite were entitled to use them. However, by the 1800's they had become so fashionable that the commonfolk were using them, too. Every piece of clothing and accessory possible was decorated with ribbon; even baskets and furniture was embellished with...
