Description
Nature gives to every time and season some beauties of its own; and from morning to night, as from the cradle to the grave, it is but a succession of changes so gentle and easy that we can scarcely mark their progress.
~ Charles Dickens

Rocky Mountain Bee Plant ; Pink Bee-Plant (Cleome serrulata)
Family - Caper
Spider Flower (Cleome hassleriana)
Family - Cleome (Capparaceae)
I'm not at all fond of spiders, so calling it a spider flower doesn't stir me at all (apparently so called due to the similarity of a harvest spider unfolding its legs). I do, however, like bees so my preference is to call it the bee plant, which is the North American wild version. (The spider flower is the garden version).
The plant is very intriguing - particularly the coiled springlike stamens that spring open to reveal a petal. They look like the strings of a harp to me. The seedpods are especially long.
This plant, a native to South America, is a favorite locally; it is easy to spot it about. It can grow grow to 5 ft (1.5 m) tall.

Connie Handscomb replied:
Thank you, Hanne, for your lavish compliments! I love these blooms, they splay all over the place with so much energy & diversity .. there was a heck of a wind when I was taking these -- which I loved, brings with it such interesting effects {will be interesting to see what I get when it is calm} :)))

You are so kind! this is one of the 'darker' images .. I'm glad you like it; perhaps I'll post the lighter, brighter ones in the near future :)))
