Solomon's Seal (David's Harp; Jacob's Ladder; Lady's Lockets; Lily Of The Mountain)
Polygonatum multiflorum
Family: Lilaceae
This tall perennial wildflower - also called an herb - which can be found in the shade of woodlands of Europe, Asia and North America is a close relative of lily of the valley. Its stem is tough, with a rhythmic structure, like a skeleton, from which swing its scented bells.
Medicinally, it is used to strengthen bones, joints, tendons, and teeth. King Solomon (wiser than all men) appoved of the use of roots for healing - hence, it's name. A decoction of the root heals wounds and sores; in the 16th century, the bruised roots were applied to joints and broken bones to help them mend. It can remove the marks of black and blue bruises, and relieve neuralgia and stomach inflammation. The Native Americans used it as a wash against the effects of poison ivy.
Cosmetically, it has been used as a skin tonic, and to clear freckles.
It has culinary uses as well: in Turkey, the young shoots are cooked with asparagus, though it should be noted that this plant - like many wildflowers - is poisonous, so you must know what you are doing.
