Green Headed Coneflower (Cut leafed coneflower; Sochan; Wild goldenglow)
Rudbeckia laciniata
Family : Asteraceae (Sunflower)
This bright wildflower native to North America can be found growing along trails and roadways, in meadows and alongside streams and rivers. And ... like many other wildflowers nowadays ... it is now also found in our gardens.
Medicinally, its roots are used as an immune stimulant, similar to Echinacea. It was popular with early midwives to help in childbirth. The indigenous people made poultices from the blossoms to treat burns, and used a root infusion for indigestion.
The leaves are edible, as Native Americans have proved for a long time; they call the cooked greens Sochan.

Butterfly and wildflower gardens have been popular in our area for some time. Our botanical and garden centres sell wildflower seeds so we can help keep the population of these plants going, as well as providing food for the pollinators.
And, for centuries, beekeepers have used “skeps”, domed basket beehives, to shelter the bees. Looking very much like a classic woven bee skep, this happy healthy bloom is sure to attract the bees to it.
Bee skeps aside, this yellow flower seems to me to be sporting a sombrero - a good idea in the hot sun!
Captured in the sunlight ; unedited; uncropped ..... nature in all its splendour :)
