Description
Every part of this earth
is sacred to my people.
Every shining pine needle,
every sandy shore,
every mist in the dark woods,
every clearing and hummingbird insect
is holy in the memory and
experience of my people...
for all things share the same breath -
the beast, the tree, the man.
~ Chief Seattle
I love walking in deep woods as much as I love walking on the shore. It is here I find the scattered parts of myself, and gather together what urban life has littered.
Even as a young girl, I enjoyed my walks amongst the trees, breathing in the fresh earthiness of dewy leaves, kneeling every now and again to place palms against the cooling, soft moss. I have a strong memory of a little me being under leaves dappled through with sunlight in a clearing, a feeling of otherworldliness, a sense of wonder, and a hope it would last forever.
(Recently, I was heartbroken to find my favorite log near our ocean seawalk had been crudely stripped of its thick layer of lush moss which I had watched grow thicker each passing year. I delighted in the sunlight dazzling its green brilliance; then one day only remnants of the green carpet remained, rough bark rudely exposed, large bits of moss strewn on the nearby grass as if someone had scrambled away in a hurry. We think the log may have been vandalized by someone stripping it for the moss for a personal garden, although we'll never really know for certain.)
Being deep in a forest is a pacifier for me; a private stillness builds deep within my core, realigns my thoughts, centres me, stills me, heals me. Perhaps my primeval inner soul recognizes the one of Nature, and they bond, and become as One in peace and connecting partnership.

What an impressive capture! I really like the angle you chose, Connie...and it's so perfect in black and white...nice work! L/F
Connie Handscomb replied:
Hi Aurelio! I guess the angle was really chosen for me .. I was below a ridge of trees so .. it worked out this way, looking up at them :)))

You have captured something that goes beyond a mere photo or image, Connie. "Majesty" comes to mind with a tiny hint of "haunting." Impressive is an understatement. FAV

Magnificent capture Connie! Thank you for sharing your love for such places in your wonderful photography and the beautifully written words in the sidebar. Don't worry too much about the stripping of the moss, some people think their own needs matter more than others. Forests have a marvellous way of regenerating and before too long the moss will regrow.
Connie Handscomb replied:
Thank goodness they do! thank you, Linda .. I hope the moss comes back quickly; it tends to grow very slowly :)))

A tremendous black and white landscape. And I love the mysterious mood about it dear friend. ;-) FV
Connie Handscomb replied:
A big thank you to my friend Nick ;))) {just made another coconut cake; I'll save you a slice .. it goes rather quickly here..}
