Common Field Poppy (Flanders poppy; red poppy; coquelito; wild corn poppy)
Papaver rhoeas
Nothing about the common field poppy is narcotic. (It is the Asian species Papaver somniferum where opium comes from by cutting & tipping the juice from the unripe seed heads; the dry seeds are entirely edible, & are the poppy seeds we like to use in baking). The common poppy seeds are used in baking but are less flavorful than the Asian species.
The poppy is popular worldwide. The red poppy is common in Britain; it is a symbol of remembrance (and the flower of Norfolk and Essex). It is also found on Egyptian tomb paintings. In Persia, it is known as the flower of love. Sacred to Aphrodite & Ceres, it is said the Roman goddess Ceres - the Earth, or agricultural goddess - had poppies in one hand: the poppies are meant to symbolize fruitfulness, or abundant crops. The equivalent Greek goddess was called Demeter.

Captured in the sunlight on a summer's day, a glimpse into the interior of the wild red poppy, which seems to have the most delectable edible inside .... a sweet treat for pollinators.
