Description
This is the most beautiful place we have ever seen....
~ Goethe [in a letter to his friend Charlotte von Stein during his stay in Bern in 1779]
* ------------------------------ *
On the River Aare is the beautiful cobbled city of historic Bern, the capital of Switzerland. It is a university city, the seat of the Federal Assembly and headquarters for several international organizations.
For all this, it still retains a unique medieval charm, and the Old City of Bern, with its ancient red-roofed structures, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ref. 267.
The city was founded in 1191, with its coat of arms being a bear. It was named after the first animal that was killed by the duke at this new settlement: Bär is German for bear; hence, the name city name Bärn .... now Bern.
Many famous people have lived in Bern, one of them being Albert Einstein who came up with is theory of relativity here in 1905. His apartment was at 49 Kramgasse , and The Einstein Museum celebrates his work.
Many of Bern's streets are restricted to pedestrians and public transport, and there are several bridges over the river which winds its way through the city.
The River Aare flows from the Bernese Alps, and when the sun shines, the locals can be seen swimming in its clear, aquamarine waters.

OMG Connie, I was living in the house at the end of the bridge (called Felsenburg). I will be there for holiday in two months visiting my family. I love this picture, it's fabulous l/f and tweet

Gorgeous scene from above!
Connie Handscomb replied:
Thank you so much, Bob! a wide angle lens might have been a good thing here .. did what I could without - I'm often not at all prepared for these captures while traveling! So, I'm really grateful to you :))
Glenn DiPaola
I'll be back for those fantastic new nature images you have posted recently, but I had to see this one now. The colors are so extraordinary. Your framing could not have been better to give the viewer an understanding of what lies outside the frame. I want to go see the buildings on the left, cross the bridge and go up the street to those trees. Beautifully inviting work. L/F
Connie Handscomb replied:
Hi Glenn! On a sunny day in Switzerland, everything is greener than green, the waters too. You may have an opportunity to see more buildings in other shots I'll be uploading in the near future; there was a sweep of "everything"I couldn't handle all (like arriving hungry at a food buffet & you want it all even though you just won't be able to eat everything) ... so I focused on the river & its swimmers. Thanks so much for your compliments! Looking forward to seeing you soon :))
Sunil Kapadia
Lovely composition and viewpoint. Marvelous color with great details. Lovely even lighting. L/F
Connie Handscomb replied:
Thank you, Sunil! We had good sun that day, really brightened the water... which was already a lovely aquamarine:))
