Snowdrop (Milkflower)
Galanthus nivalis (common snowdrop)

Galanthus , fr Greek gala = milk ; and anthos = flower

Folklore has it that, when worn outside, the snowdrops would keep one having pure thoughts (apparently, however, they were bad luck to bring indoors, so take note!).

At the top of the stem is a protective leaf that helps the snowdrop push through snow. A snowdrop has no petals; rather, it has tepals .

Its healing properties are known as far back as 1465. Galantamine is an alkaloid found in the bulbs and flowers of some snowdrops [Galanthus caucasicus] and is used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. This plant is also being investigated into treatment of HIV.

Tucked into the shadows, under the leaves of a sheltering small bush, was this wee bloom in a secret universe all its own. Originally, I was going to post it in black and white in keeping with the inherent mystery of biological growth but have decided to post the colour image (the depths of its hues are quite dark , too; as well, the touch of natural graininess adds to the drama & mystery of the subject matter).
