Description
This distinguished form of the palm, superior to all other plants, the noble bearing, the stem striving to reach the skies -- its nourishing fruits, the materials for clothing and shelter -- all these combined to create the sense of a higher being inherent in it, if not a godhead then surely the dwelling of the same.
~ B. Minter [horticulturalist]

A palm house is a greenhouse designed for growing palms, and other tropical plants. The Palm House at Kew Gardens was designed by Decimus Burton in the 1840's, and built by Richard Turner. It is located at Kew Gardens, London, England, a World Heritage Site famous for its botanical gardens (aka The Royal Botanic Gardens).
The rainforest climate inside this huge structure supports a wide and unique collection of species, some that are the most threatened in our world today; apparently, some have even gone extinct.
The palm house requires constant heat and humidity; temperatures never fall below 7deg C, so it is relatively high maintenance, and yet it was done by the Victorians, who had a passion for plants. They collected them ambitiously and displayed even the most exotic with pride.
The Monarchy handed over the gardens to the public in 1841. Today, it displays no fewer than 30,000 plants. A scientific research centre is also on the premises.

A quick, candid capture from inside the Victorian Palm House, displaying the unpretentious flow of fronds and greenery similar to what you might see 'au naturelle' outdoors in the tropical rainforest.
