Description
To build a city where it is impossible to build a city is madness in itself, but to build there one of the most elegant and grandest of cities is the madness of genius.
~ Alexander Herzen

Venice was built on the water when the people of the area feared invasions from the north. Forests were cut so that millions of stakes could be sunk into the mud which, over time, petrified and formed the city's foundation. (Wood does not decay in oxygen-deprived water as it does in open air).
There are no roads here, only waterways of narrow canals and alleyways. Much has remained unchanged for centuries.
From spring through to autumn, the sun is strong, with added brilliance from the water; the buildings are colourful and bright in its light.
My original image of an afternoon on the Venetian waterways, digitally painted - a lightly textured background created to add additional presence to the sky and applied to the scene.
