On the east side of the Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square) in Venice is the Basilica San Marco (St. Mark's Basilica). Or, most formally: the Basilica Cattedrale Patriarcale di San Marco. The Byzantine cathedral which dates back to 9th century A.D. dominates the square. Its enormous size reflected the power of the Venetian Republic. This was the Doge's chapel, surrounded by over 4,000 sq m (43,000 sq ft) of mosaics and treasures. It became the city cathedral in 1807.
There are five entrances to the Basilica, and above each entrance is a large gilded mosaic. This one is found over the central portal. It is the Last Judgment by Lattanzio Serena and Liborio Salandri, put there in 1836 to replace one that had been damaged (any mosaics damaged over the centuries were replaced with identical subject matter). The nickname of the basilica is the Chiesa d'Orco .. the Church of Gold.

The Easter weekend is almost upon us, and made me think of an image of the mosaic I had taken in Venice. From the original photograph, I textured around the gilded mosaic to provide a look of antiquity. It is here now for those who observe the Easter holiday, or who admire ancient Byzantine artworks.
