Description
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
~ by John McCrae, May 1915

Common Field Poppy (Flanders poppy; red poppy; coquelito; wild corn poppy)
Papaver rhoeas
Nothing about the common field poppy is narcotic. (It is the Asian species Papaver somniferum where opium comes from by cutting & tipping the juice from the unripe seed heads; the dry seeds are entirely edible, & are the poppy seeds we like to use in baking). The common poppy seeds are also used in baking but are less flavourful than the Asian species.
It is said the Roman goddess Ceres had poppies in one hand. Ceres was an earth, or agricultural goddess. The poppies are meant to symbolize fruitfulness, or abundant crops. The equivalent Greek goddess was called Demeter.
