Artist's Description
In Switzerland, on a summer's day, make a visit to Wallis, take two loonnngg gondola rides up a mountainside from the alpine villages ... and reach the top of the world to see The Great Aletsch Glacier : the largest glacier in the Swiss Alps.
The glacier is about 14 miles long (23 km) and covers 46 sq mi (120 sq km). Its widest point is about 1 mile across (2 km). It peaks at 9,603 ft (2,927 m).
This area is an UNESCO World Heritage site and, as such, is protected. The glacier has retreated a great deal in the last 18,000 years ... frighteningly so during the last 80 years.

Connie, Indeed it is. Lovely title and your description is enlightening as well. Many people scoff at the idea of global warming but I feel that it is a reality and a serious threat. Severe and catastrophic weather is on the rise all over the planet and not going to get any better until something changes soon! Jerry
Connie Handscomb replied:
The pictures from the early 20's of this glacier ... to what is left of it now shows a very dramatic difference in what is left of the ice; the tar sands in Alberta use Rocky Mountain glacier water for what they do (& it becomes a dirty tailings pond!} ... so of COURSE that glacier is shrinking, too; I had not the equipment for the panoramic vista of what this glacier truly is but as always, your endless appreciation of what I do is always appreciated, Jerry {I've just made some cake .. I'll set some aside for you} :)))
