Peony
Botanical Name : Paeonia
Family : Paeoniaceae [ prev. Ranunculaceae (buttercup) ]
Greek, fr. Paeon, physician of the gods
Originally from China, where it was used medicinally, the peony has traversed the world. Paeony officianalis .. the 'medicinal peony' with the feathery leaves... grew in English monastery gardens, and was used for female ailments. (The Paeony mascula was used for male illnesses). By the the time it reached the Americas, the peony was grown for primarily for ornamental purposes.
Please do not disturb your peony!: it can live for hundreds of years if you leave it be.
