Japanese Quince ( Chaenomeles japonica; C. japonica; flowering quince; Japonica; Maule's Quince)
Family : Rosaceae
This popular ornamental shrub (and bonsai) is native to Japan. Its flowers are usually red, although they can also be white or pink.
If it bears fruit, it will be small, yellow, and apple shaped. The fruit will be very hard, and astringent, and while it can be eaten raw, it would be an unpleasant experience. It is more appealing to the palate as a marmalade (apparently there is more pectin in it than in a 'true' quince or apple), a preserve, or - for those who imbibe - in a liqueur.
Apparently, too, flowering quinces also contain more Vitamin C than lemons!

This pastel quince was captured on a rare day (this year!) without sopping rains or gale force winds ... something that is happening outside my window now as I write this. The bloom had a grey wall as its background: an elegant showcase for this refined, classic floral beauty.
Uncropped; unedited .... nature in all its splendour :)
