The amaryllis is a refined and dignified beauty in the floral kingdom. It is popular during the Christmas holiday season, and as a winter houseplant because it will flower even on the darkest days, with blooms that last for a long time. With care, the plant can last for several years.
Native to South and Central America, the amaryllis was discovered in the Andes in the mid-18th century. The Dutch have been instrumental in developing the modern varieties, and in Greece, there are neighbourly rivalries to show the most spectacular amaryllis display.
There are 80-90 species.
